Born in Cali, Colombia and raised in Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington, Mike Gebhart grew up between two worlds. Introduced to music by his mother Adalgiza Gebhart Angulo, a composer and pianist, he made writing, improvising and performing music his focus from a very early age. He studied at the University of Washington and became an integral member of the Racer Sessions scene in Seattle Washington.
Gebhart co-created The Sky Is A Suitcase in 2014 along with Ray Larsen, Carmen Quill and Levi Gillis. Suitcase recorded and released two records The Sky Is A Suitcase (2016) and Rain Rhythm (2018). In July of 2025, the quartet recorded its third record which will be released sometime in 2026. Along with performances in New York, LA and Seattle celebrating the release of the record.
In 2017 Mike became a member of the electro-cumbia band Terror/Cactus playing primarily congas, timbales and percussion. This group has performed all over the US, Canada and Colombia. They served as the backing band for Mexican artist Pahua, in her first US Tour. T/C has opened for the band Yin Yin as well as Wet Leg and Hiatus Kaiyote. They have a new record Colapso coming out mid 2026 which reimagines the sound with a full band of guitar, bass, saxophone, percussion and live drum set.
In 2018 he started to play trio with the NY downtown legendary pianist-composer Wayne Horvitz and the inimitable bassist Geoff Harper. They held a residency at Seattle’s The Royal Room for a year, playing every Wednesday late night. Mike has continued to collaborate with Wayne Horvitz on Music For 10 Musicians (2025) and In Absentia (2023)
Mike moved to New York City in 2019 and started playing with NY songwriter’s and bands Eliana Glass, Oropendola, Luxury Skin, Alena Spanger, Office Culture, Katy The Kyng and The Dyng-A-Lyngs, Eamon Fogerty, Glenn Echo, and Alexia Avina.
He co-created a quintet called Citrine with Greg Sinibaldi, Ivan Arteaga, Ryan El-Solh and Carmen Quill. This group acts as a vehicle for the members compositions. The group live scored a film project of Mike’s entitled No Telephone, in 2024 as well as recorded an album that is coming out soon.
He and cellist/bassist David Balatero have a free improvisation duo project called Zone Of with a record to be released sometime in the near future.
Mike has performed at legendary venues and festivals such as Red Rocks, Pickathon, Big Ears Festival, Joe’s Pub, Smalls Jazz Club, The Owl Music Parlor, Three’s Brewing, Cassette, The Royal Room, Vermillion, Cafe Racer, Scribble, Capitol Hill Block Party, Public Records, Thing Festival, Montreal’s L’ nuits d’ Afrique, and many more.
In 2025, Mike moved to Highland Park Los Angeles and performs there as well as in NYC and Seattle. He is teaching classes on Colombian Drumming at Scribble in Highland Park, teaching in local elementary schools and performing at Bub and Grandma’s, Scribble, Justine’s, Little Beast and more!
